Percy William Archer and his brother, Horace, clubbed together in 1920 to form a removals and general haulage business in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. In the early days, the haulage side of their enterprise was involved in a diverse range of work, from domestic waste collection to the transportation of blocks of ice from the Darlington Pure Ice Factory to Northallerton, where they would then be sold to the market town’s many fishmongers and butchers. In 1946 the company was incorporated as P.W. Archer & Son, operating out of a depot on East Road, Northallerton.
Following the nationalisation of road haulage companies which arrived as a result of the 1947 Transport Act, in the early 1950s the size of the company’s fleet was reduced when its vehicles involved in general haulage were compulsorily acquired by the government of the day. Since the removals sector was exempt from nationalisation, the company’s removals division quickly grew in stature and expanded into storage and warehousing. By the 1960s P.W. Archer & Son was in a strong position: Percy was able to concentrate his efforts on the furniture shop he had opened on Northallerton High Street, while his son, John, oversaw the firm’s haulage, removals and warehousing operations.
When Percy died in November 1962, his company’s depot was relocated to a far larger site in the nearby Springwell Lane. This afforded greater scope for haulage operations, particularly the storage and distribution of fertiliser around the county which was a mainstay of the company’s work. John’s son, Kenneth, joined the business in 1973 to support day-to-day operations and took on greater responsibility after his father passed away in December 2005. The Archer Family still operate P.W. Archer & Son to this day, the 4 th Generation, Geoff (Operations and Removals) and Paul (Haulage) and as well as Geoff’s wife, Charlotte (Office manager)
P.W. Archer & Son continues to provide its private and commercial clients with topnotch removals and storage offerings, specialist lorry-mounted crane services and secure storage out of its alarmed premises in Northallerton. The company is in charge of a well-maintained fleet comprising one 18-tonne vehicle, a 7.5-tonne truck and two smaller vans for removals, as well as an impressive 44-tonne gross vehicle weight six-wheel lorry and drag trailer combination for its customers in need of remote crane facilities. These include, among others, the construction and steel fabrication industries which often require transportation of machinery, steelwork and office cabins.
Over the years Archers Removals has built up extensive knowledge in public sector work, with a relationship with North Yorkshire Council the NHS. The company says this work is maintained as a result of keen pricing and excellent service delivery. “We deliver a service that we would expect to receive: one that’s based on traditional family values, proven standards and a blend of price and quality,” Operations Manager Geoff Archer explained. “We believe in cooperation with our customers through friendly interaction and a high level of personal attention, and most importantly delivering what we say we can.” The firm has worked hard to maintain its accreditations ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 22301 business continuity planning management, BS 8522 commercial moving and BS EN 15713 for secure destruction of confidential material.
Looking ahead, Archers Removals intends to carry on much as it does now. “We’re a fourth-generation company serving the county for over 100 years in the same family, so we believe in loyalty and the rewards it brings – we’ve even banked with the same bank since 1920. BAR Commercial Mover of the Year 2022:
Archers won the 2022 Commercial mover of the year competition that has been running since 1994 and is open to all Commercial Moving Group members of the British Association of Removers (BAR), the trade association for the UK removals industry.
The prestigious competition is designed to reward best practice between commercial movers and their clients, as well as attention to detail and adherence to the British Standard BS 8522.
Hambleton Heroes 2021:
Archers where pleased to be awarded a Hambleton hero award in 2021, from Hambleton District Council, a scheme aimed at recognising those who’ve gone above and beyond in 2021 and gives people the opportunity to say thank you to a Hambleton Hero who has supported them.
The council acknowledges the selfless acts and relentless efforts that have made a real difference to residents from across the district when they’ve needed it most and celebrate the innovative ways people have overcome challenges in their community.
